I think scars would be a great way not only to show what kind of character you are - obviously a smith or merchant wouldn't be getting scars - but a nice way to distingush the character, as well as show some skill

I think having one eye would be ok for roleplay, maybe a patch.

One option to deal with this would be having the possiblity for scars after X amount from a big battle. Say any skirmish of over 50 soldiers and someone survives they get some sorta of battlescar, that'd be neato. Temporary ones from a recent smaller skirmish maybe.

Possibly something of this sort:

There are five levels of severity of damage and severity of cut and scar.

1d is a minor impact that does between 1% and 20%% damage to the struck body part. 5d is a huge impact that does between 80% and 100% damage to the struck body part.

1-5c is the texture of a cut, which ranges from a small line of red (1) to a big gaping gash.

1-5s is the texture of a scar, which ranges from a thin white line (1) to a big pink scar (5).

When you get cut, the following is how things go.

Severity of damage leads to severity of cut and severity of scar

1d=>1c and 2s

2d=>2c and 2s

3d=>3c and 3s

4d=>4c and 4s

5d=>5c and 5s

Severity of cut lasts for 1 minute, then drops in severity to next lowest. etc. When it reaches 0, the cut disappears, revealing the scar.

Severity of scar lasts for 1 week, then drops in severity to next lowest. etc. Scars decrease in severity 3 times. Scars left after the 3rd decrease are permanent.

It is late and I am going to sleep now. Goodnight.

Well thought out and makes sense, I like that idea. Jus think there should be some variable for the amount of soldiers in a battle that would be a good indication that you lived through a HUGE battle and have the scars to prove it.

Why? Every scar will still have a story, whether you got it in practice, or war, or a duel. That is how it is in life, and how it should be in roleplay.

Also--if we are looking at scars that prove something and are looked at as signs of honor--it is no more honorable to survive a huge battle than it is to survive a duel for your family's honor, etc.

That is a valid point as well, and I guess if the battle was truly an epic battle, enough wounds would be incurred as not to have that feature implimented. I've said this about this idea in the past though, that with armor on or even just street clothes, the only thing showing would be the neck, parts of face, and head, maybe hands, but I like the idea of having this in-game.

if there were to be scars, what about full body part amputation, you could mug someone, cut off their hands, and leave em for death, but what if they live, do they play the rest of the game with no hands? if you can have scars, what about more serious damage? and the likes, what if there were to be yakuza clans in the game and they were to require their members to cut off the tip of their left pinky, would that tip of the pinky be gone forever?

On the other hand, if bathing in T:LaW has anything remotely like the importance that it had in real feudal Japan (obviously with some sort of not-very-historical bath clothing, to keep T:LaW from becoming porn) scaring could be seen quite easily. This isn't stinky old Europe... being clean is important, and bathing is a social activity.
