Scars are awesome and needed in a couple rpgs, and yet never there.

What if you could only pull off a certain killing strike if you in turn got scratched with the opponents sword. Would this still be a screw up? if you knew everytime u used this technique u were going to receive a small cut but the enemy would be dead I would still use it.

So no. I dont think they represent a screw up entirely.

Scars? Why not?
BUT not too much scars, or you'll look a mess.
Also if your planning to have a female character scars and cuts won't look too good.
But look on the bright side.
Your scars will remain, and you'll look ugly for the rest of your life.
